Apple has unveiled groundbreaking mental health features in its latest software updates, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and watchOS 10. These innovative tools offer users an opportunity to track their mental health by logging their momentary emotions and daily moods, providing valuable insights to better manage their overall mental wellbeing.
Sumbul Desai, M.D., Apple's Vice President of Health, expressed the company's goal to "empower people to take charge of their own health journey". She also stated the company’s commitment to provide its users with an extensive range of health and wellness tools. Desai emphasized the importance of mental health, often an overlooked aspect of wellbeing, and the excitement over new features that can enhance user understanding of their health.
These insights will not only assist users in making daily decisions but also foster more informed conversations with their doctors, Apple says. All the new features, along with the existing health attributes, are scientifically grounded and privacy-centric, ensuring a secure user experience.
The role of mental health in our everyday lives has gained significant recognition, influencing our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Research demonstrates the benefits of self-reflection on emotional awareness and resilience. Notably, Dr. Michelle Craske, a distinguished professor of psychology and psychiatry at UCLA, highlighted that identifying our feelings can help manage difficult emotions and improve overall wellbeing.
A survey from the UCLA Digital Mental Health Study supported these findings, with over 80 percent of participants acknowledging an increase in emotional awareness after reflecting on their mood in the study app. Furthermore, about half reported it improved their wellbeing.
The updated Health app on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, along with the Mindfulness app on watchOS 10, provide users with an engaging way to self-reflect on their mental state. Users can express their emotions through an array of multidimensional shapes that range from 'Very Pleasant' to 'Very Unpleasant'. They can then identify associations impacting their emotions, such as 'Travel' or 'Family', and further describe their feelings.
In addition to self-reflection, the Health app offers valuable insights to help users identify potential factors influencing their mental state. These factors could be associations or lifestyle choices like sleep and exercise. Moreover, recognizing that users might sometimes need extra support, the app now offers easily accessible depression and anxiety assessments, a feature often found in clinical environments.
This significant step taken by Apple aims to enable iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch users worldwide to take better care of their mental health. It is hoped that these advancements will contribute to raising awareness and acceptance of mental health globally.
