The Virgin Islands Women’s Basketball Team qualified for the 2021 AmeriCup Quarterfinals by beating El Salvador on Tuesday and will play the No. 1 Team Ranked in the World; Team USA, who have Virgin Islands native Aliyah Boston on their roster, at 12:10 on Thursday. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
The Virgin Islands began their AmeriCup with three straight losses against Colombia, Canada and Brazil before beating El Salvador 85-44 to place fourth in group A and make the quarterfinals.
Anisha George of the Virgin Islands is the AmeriCup’s leading scorer with 64 points in the Virgin Islands first four games. Her 16 points per game average is tied with Daniela Wallen of Venezuela, who has played three games.
Natalie Day is averaging 11 points per game and Imani Tate is averaging 10.5 points for the Virgin Islands as the other top scoring threats for team USVI in the AmeriCup.
Day is the tournament’s second leading rebounder with 8.8 rebounds a game. Tate is fourth on that list with 8.5 rebounds a game and George is 11th on that list with 7 rebounds a game.
The Virgin Islands have the top two players in assists per game during the AmeriCup with Lanese Bough averaging 5.3 assists a game and Tate averaging 4.8.
George is second on the tournaments block list with 2.3 blocks a game and is only behind Boston, who is averaging 2.7 blocks per game.
Team USA has had a much smoother path to the quarterfinals as they outscored their opponents Puerto Rico Venezuela and the Dominican Republic by a combined 134 points.
Boston comes into the quarterfinals at sixth on the tournament's points per game list with 13.3 points a game in Team USA’s three games. Boston is ninth on the AmeriCup’s rebounds list with 7.7 rebounds a game.
The other match-ups in the quarterfinals on Thursday will be Canada vs. Dominican Republic at 3:10, Brazil vs. Venezuela at 6:10, and Puerto Rico vs. Colombia at 9:10.
The winner of the USVI and USA Match-up will play the winner of Brazil and Venezuela at 6:10 on Friday in the Semifinals.
