V.I. Track and Field Athlete Michelle Smith Builds on Momentum, Wins Gold in Adidas Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina

St. Croix Track Club athlete Michelle Smith over the weekend won gold in the Adidas Outdoor Track and Field Nationals in Greensboro, NC, according to the V.I. Track and Field Federation.

Smith ran on Father’s Day, June 19, and won a gold medal in the Girls Championship 400m Hurdles in 59.96 seconds. On her birthday, June 18, Michelle also earned All American status by placing 5th in the Girls Championship 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.22.

Smith is preparing to represent the Virgin Islands in the World Athletics U20 Championships which will be held in Cali, Columbia from Aug. 1 through 6. She will also compete in the VI National Championships on June 24 and 25.

Elsewhere, St. Croix Track Club athlete Johann Clendinen, who competed for the Virgin Islands in the USATF New York Masters competition in New York on June 18, won 3 Gold medals in the 70-74 year competition, Discus 22.20m, Hammer Throw 18.73m and Shot Put 8.28m, the federation said.

The federation will be hosting the Virgin Islands National Track and Field Championships on St. Croix at the St. Croix Educational Complex track on June 24 and 25, 2022.
