V.I. Basketball Federation Announces New Head Coach Ahead of 2022 FIBA AmeriCup Championship Set for Sept. 2-11

Edniesha Curry

The V.I. Basketball Federation on Sunday announced Edniesha Curry as the new head coach of the Virgin Islands senior men national team, which represents the territory in international competition. 

According to the release, Ms. Curry was an assistant coach with the 2021-2022 Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association, and was a part of the 2022 Trail Blazers coaching staff of the NBA summer league that won the summer league championship. She previously played in the Women's National Basketball Association for the Phoenix Mercury and the Los Angeles Sparks.

Additionally, she was an assistant coach with the University of Maine men’s basketball team from 2018-21. Ms. Curry previously served as a player development and assistant coach for the Maine women’s basketball program from 2015-17.

She is a graduate of the NBA Assistant Coaches’ Program where she gained experience working at the NBA Draft Combine and the NBA G League Showcase. In 2019, Ms. Curry served as a guest coach for San Antonio’s summer league team and assisted with Minnesota’s pre-draft workouts. She has also coached and done player development work internationally in Vietnam, China, Israel and Palestine. 

The VI Federation is a member of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) assigned to the Zone of Americas, and competes in the Central American and Caribbean (CONCECABA) Sub-Zone and the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Sub-Zone to qualify for Zone and World Championships.

The Virgin Islands Senior Men team will be participating in the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup Championship in Recife, Brazil from Sept 2-11.

According to the V.I. Basketball Federation, the AmeriCup is the most prestigious competition for senior men’s basketball in the Americas. The Virgin Islands men best finish in the tournament was in 2017 when the team finished in fourth place.

The USVI is placed in Group B and will face Argentina (Sept 3.), Dominican Republic (Sept. 4) and Puerto Rico (Sept. 6). The two best finishers in each group (of 3) as well as the two best third-place teams in the competition will move on to the quarterfinals.
