The V.I. Track and Field Federation has unveiled its team set to represent the islands at the World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary. This prestigious event, occurring every two years, spotlights global talents in track & field, and marathon races, under the aegis of World Athletics.
Originally known as IAAF, World Athletics adopted a new ranking system about three years ago to streamline the athlete qualification process for major track & field events. For an athlete to gain rank, participation in at least five high-caliber meets is a prerequisite. Rankings are determined based on performance, the position secured, and the overall stature of the meet.
Representing the Virgin Islands in the 2023 World Athletics Championships will be Malique Smith, who will showcase his prowess in the 400m hurdles. He will be guided and trained under the experienced eye of coach Jean Carlos Arroyo.
In addition to the athletic competitions, the World Championships also plays host to important administrative events. Voting in the World Athletics Elections will be undertaken by VITFF President, Keith A. Smith Sr., and the VITFF General Secretary, Mireille Sankatsing-Smith. Furthermore, Ronald Russell will be in attendance in his capacity as a current World Athletic Council executive.
