ST. JOHN — Despite a loss to Curacao on Friday, the Virgin Islands National Women’s Softball Team is still in contention for a first-place finish at the 2023 English Caribbean Amateur Softball Confederation (ECASC) Women’s Fast-Pitch Tournament Qualifier.
After having dispatched St. Maarten on Wednesday, Aruba on Thursday, and the British Virgin Islands during their first game of Friday’s double-header, the USVI women went down 9-0 to Curacao, leaving the visitors the only unbeaten team of the tournament.
One more day of regular play remains before the four top teams move to Sunday’s title games. Today, USVI plays Jamaica, who currently sits at the bottom of the rankings, with a 0-3 record thus far.
When Consortium journalists spoke to USVI Softball Federation Director Jose Tony Rosario ahead of the tournament, he said he was anticipating a high standard of play. He also noted the impact hosting the biggest softball tournament of the territory to date might have on younger players who can finally have an in-person view of the game being played at an elite level.
“If we bring them home, we might have a bunch of young ladies in the audience who say, ‘I want to be like that one day’,” Rosario remarked.
Saturday’s games are BVI vs. Curacao at 11 am, Curacao vs. St. Maarten at 2 pm, Jamaica vs. Aruba at 5 pm, and Jamaica vs USVI at 8 pm, all taking place at the National Park Ball Field on St. John.
