In a thrilling conclusion to their Paradise Jam campaign, the Sun Devil women's basketball team claimed a hard-fought 77-69 win against High Point on Saturday at the UVI Sports & Fitness Center in St. Thomas.
The victory was highlighted by standout performances from Jalyn Brown, who led the game with a career-high 20 points, and Treasure Hunt, who nearly achieved a double-double with 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Sun Devils showcased a strong team effort, with Trayanna Crisp contributing 12 points and a game-high four assists. Journey Thompson also made significant contributions with 11 points, tying with Hunt for the team lead in rebounds. Jaddan Simmons rounded out the effort for the Sun Devils (6-2) with nine points, six rebounds, and three assists.
This game marked a notable achievement for ASU, as they shot 50 percent from the field, a feat they hadn't accomplished since their win at San Diego on December 18, 2021.
ASU started strong, leading by as many as 12 points in the first quarter. The remainder of the game saw the team maintaining their lead against the persistent Panthers (3-4). High Point, led by Anna Hager with 16 points and six rebounds, narrowed the gap to just three points midway through the final quarter. However, ASU responded with critical baskets from Brown and Hunt, including two 3-pointers from Hunt in quick succession.
The Panthers continued to challenge, coming within five points, but Crisp secured the Sun Devils' lead with eight crucial points in the final quarter, four of them scored consecutively in the last few minutes, ensuring that High Point could not close the gap.
The game began with the Sun Devils focused and efficient, shooting 50 percent in the opening period. Brown and Hunt combined for 15 points, shooting at an impressive 60 percent. Sandra Magolico also added to the tally with four points and five rebounds, while Simmons led ASU with four rebounds in the quarter.
The initial period saw both teams evenly matched, but ASU surged ahead with the last 10 points of the quarter, ending it with a 23-11 lead. High Point fought back fiercely in the second quarter, outscoring the Sun Devils 24-16, but ASU maintained their lead, finishing the half ahead at 39-35.
The game's intense pace and relentless efforts from both teams made it a thrilling encounter, but it was ASU's early lead and consistent performance that ultimately secured their victory in this Paradise Jam finale.
