St. Croix Track Club's Mustangs clinched a significant victory on May 27 and 28 at the prestigious Speed Capital Series Track & Field Championships in Miramar, Florida. The Mustangs topped the charts in the Team Standing for Division C, amassing a staggering 239 points, surpassing the runner-up team by a 12-point margin.
The Mustangs returned with a hoard of 23 medals, including six gold, twelve silver, and five bronze. Among the athletes, Michelle Smith, who triumphed in four events, was a standout, taking home the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the female 17-18 age group.
The Mustangs were represented by 15 athletes, who competed in Division C, a category for teams with "20 athletes and less". They proved their mettle against 35 competing teams, participating in a myriad of Track & Field events, ranging from sprints, distance, jumps, throws, hurdles, to speed walking.
Under the competition's scoring system, points were allocated to the top eight finishers in the final of each event. The first place was awarded 10 points, the second place 8, the third place 6, and so on until the eighth place that received a point.
On the first day of the championships, the Mustangs took home 4 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals. This incredible haul included Michelle Smith's gold in the 100m Hurdles, 800m and High Jump, and Jeniqua Weekes's gold in the High Jump.
On the championship's second day, the Mustangs continued their medal streak, bagging an additional nine medals, consisting of 2 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze. This included Michelle Smith's gold in the 400m Hurdles, and Katelyn Jones's gold in the 3000m race.
