A 35-year-old Calquohoun, St. Croix native is celebrating an impressive victory following his recent participation in a regional drag racing event.

Lenroy Cambran spoke to Consortium journalists just days after walking away with the coveted titles of Grudge Match Winner, Crowd Favorite and Event Record Holder. As explained by an enthusiastic Cambran, “I was contacted by Team Raven out of Antigua to compete in their ‘Legends Are Born In April’ event from April 29th to 30th. It was a grudge match (3 races) against Antigua’s fastest car. I won all three races!” This recent victory has further boosted his profile on the regional racing scene.

Mr. Cambran, who is the owner and driver for USVI-based LeNyra Racing, says import drag racing is his life’s passion. He has been racing for over two decades, having participated in St. Croix’s Junior Dragstar program since the age of 12. When asked how this passion was born, Cambran reminisced, “at an early age I was going to the car track with my parents to watch my uncle race.”

He’s come a long way since then, having made a name for himself on the track. As the enthusiast told the Consortium, “I have been very successful in the 7:50 racing index in Orlando Florida, winning 90 percent of the races throughout the years.”

He says while racing has impacted his life in several ways, the most significant is perhaps the bond it has created with his family and community. “The love and support from my family is what keeps me motivated,” he said proudly. “Drag racing takes a lot of dedication, time and discipline. But the love and support from my mom, dad, wife, kids, aunt and close friends made it all possible!” He added that community support has also been integral to his success, and expressed his deepest gratitude to the Virgin Islands community for assisting him, most recently providing donations to allow Cambran to travel to New Jersey to compete.

The tradition of drag racing seems to be one which will live on in Cambran’s family, as his three children- ages 8, 13 and 14 are already following along their father’s tracks. But Mr. Cambran hopes that he can also nurture the dreams and success of other young racing enthusiasts across the territory. As he puts it, “Becoming a drag racer has always been my dream ever since I was a little boy and because of my dedication and love for this sport, I have been allowed many opportunities that may seem impossible when coming from a small island. That’s why I was so adamant about bringing back the program that helped mold me into the driver that I am today. So I have to give thanks to [V.I. Dept. of] Sports Park & Recreation as well as CDRA for partnering with me to bring back the Junior Dragster program for the youths of the Virgin Islands.”

When asked about the future he envisions for himself as a racer, Cambran excitedly proclaimed: “My ultimate goal is to shine a light and pave the way for other Virgin Islanders who dream of competing on such a grand stage. Also, to return home one day and race on the track where it all started for me!” He sees himself traveling around the world and showcasing his talent, but most importantly, “representing the place that I call home, the Virgin Islands.”
