One of the territory’s premier young athletes has disclosed her choice of college: USVI Sports Ambassador Michelle Smith signed a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday, signaling her decision to attend the University of Georgia.
In introducing Ms. Smith, Governor Albert Bryan Jr.’s chief of staff Karl Knight summarized some of her recent career highlights – two CARIFTA gold medals, three medals (2 gold, 1 silver) at the NACAC Under 18 games, and a silver in the PanAmerican Under 20 championships.
Mr. Knight said listed her among a long line of outstanding track athletes from the Virgin Islands: Eddie Lovett, Eduardo Garcia, Laverne Jones, Flora Hyacinth, Mohammed Hakeem, Brian Morissette and Neville Hodge among others.
Dept. of Sports, Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Calvert White, expressed his congratulations to Ms. Smith for her achievements in sports. He mentioned that he has been in regular communication with Ms. Smith's father regarding her progress and has even attended several of her sporting events, showcasing his support for her athletic endeavors.
Speaking just ahead of the signing, Ms. Smith described her campus of choice. “It just reminds me of home – all the trees, the scenery.” The coaches at her chosen university, she said, welcomed her as part of the family. “Georgia Bulldogs!” Ms. Smith said, finally revealing her choice.
Ms. Smith's father and coach, Keith Smith, as well as her sister, Mikaela Smith, and her mother, Mireille Smith joined her at Gov't House on Tuesday for the reveal.
