RHINE-RUHR, GERMANY — Virgin Islands hurdler Michelle Smith has qualified for the semi-finals in the Women’s 400m Hurdles at the 2025 FISU World University Games after delivering a strong performance in her opening heat.
Competing in Heat 5, Smith placed second with a time of 56.99 seconds, the 9th fastest time overall in a highly competitive field.
Smith will return to the track for the semi-final round today. She is scheduled to run in Semi-Final #2, starting at 2:08 p.m. local time in Germany (8:08 a.m. Virgin Islands time), where she will compete from Lane 6.
Brandon Pemberton to Compete in 200m First Round
Also representing the Virgin Islands at the FISU World University Games is sprinter Brandon Pemberton. After participating in the 100m earlier this week, Pemberton is preparing for his next event—the Men’s 200m.
He is scheduled to compete on Wednesday, July 23 at 1:04 p.m. local time in Germany (7:04 a.m. Virgin Islands time) in Heat 4 from Lane 8.
The advancement criteria for the 200m event are strict: the top two finishers in each heat will move forward to the semi-finals, along with the next eight fastest times across all heats. Pemberton will look to capitalize on this opportunity and build momentum in his athletic progression.
Both athletes continue to represent the Virgin Islands with distinction on the global stage.
