Malique Smith Claims First Place, Michelle Smith Shines in College Track Meets

Malique Smith wins the 600m at the RADD Sports College Invitational with a near-record time, while Michelle Smith delivers an outstanding debut at the Ted Nelson Invitational, setting a new meet record in the 4x400m relay.

Malique Smith and Michelle Smith, standout athletes from the Virgin Islands, delivered remarkable performances in their respective collegiate indoor track meets, bringing pride to their home territory, according to the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation.

Malique Smith claimed first place in the 600 meters at the RADD Sports College Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, on January 24. His impressive time of 1:19.40 was just 0.7 seconds shy of the Virgin Islands record of 1:18.73, held by Tabarie Henry. 

On January 25, Michelle Smith made an extraordinary debut for the University of Georgia at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station, Texas. She delivered a stunning performance in the 400 meters, winning her heat with a time of 53.68 seconds.

Michelle also ran the second leg of the 4x400 meters relay, where her 52.44-second split contributed to the University of Georgia’s new meet record of 3:30.39. This time is not only the third fastest in UGA history but also the leading time in the NCAA this season.

The excitement around Virgin Islands track and field continues with the Interscholastic Track and Field Series on St. Croix. On Thursday, January 30, middle school and high school athletes will compete starting at 4 PM at the St. Croix Educational Track and Field Facility. The series will continue on Friday, January 31, with elementary school athletes taking to the track at the same location and time.
