The Virgin Islands were outmatched by the #4 ranked and a slow start doomed them against one of the world’s best teams in their second game of the AmeriCup on Saturday afternoon as they lost 101-41. Virgin Islands native Aliyah Boston played in Team USA’s opening victory against the Dominican Republic.
Canada were absolutely dominant all game against the Virgin Islands and in the first half jumped out to a 27-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and were up 48-13 at halftime. The landslide continued in the second half as Canada outscored the Virgin Islands 53-28 in that period.
Anisha George had 11 points and Monila Williams had 10 points as the two Virgin Islands players who had double digits points.
Canada's scoring was well-rounded as they had six players with double digit points. Shaina Pellington made 4 out of her 5 three point attempts to lead Canada with 16 points. Jamie Scott also hit four three pointers and scored 14 points, Nirra Fields also scored 14 points while Aaliyah Edwards had 13 points, Aislinn Koing had 12 points and Laeticia Amihere had 10 points for the Canadians.
The Virgin Islands will finish group play in FIBA AmeriCup with Brazil at 3:10 on Monday and El Salvador at 12:10 on Tuesday to close out group play. It is possible that the final game against El Salvador will be for fourth place in the group which will determine the last spot in the quarterfinals of the AmeriCup.
Virgin Islander Aliyah Boston is playing for Team USA in the AmeriCup as they defeated the Dominican Republic in convincing fashion, 102-39 in their first game of the Tournament. Boston scored 10 points 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal in the opening day performance. Destani Henderson, Boston’s South Carolina teammate, led team USA with 17 points in the rout.
They were 2 of the four Americans to have double-digit points. The other two were Sedona Prince and Elissa Anne Cunane with 12 points each.
Team USA will play Puerto Rico Sunday night at 9:10, Venezuela at 6:10 on Monday evening and Argentina on Tuesday night at 9:10 to close out their group stage. All Games will be able to be streamed on ESPN+.
