Virgin Islands Athletes Set New National Records in Track and Field

National records shattered by Conhoff and Garcia in prestigious international competitions

Virgin Islands Track and Field athletes Rachel Conhoff and Eduardo Garcia have set new VI national records in their respective events, marking significant achievements in their athletic careers.

Conhoff, a graduate student at Indiana State University and a member of the Virgin Islands Track and Field Team, achieved a new Virgin Islands record in the 3000m Steeplechase at the Gary Wieneke Memorial in Champaign, Illinois. Competing on April 13, Conhoff finished fourth overall with a record time of 11:11.15. Conhoff's next competition, the Gibson Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana, is scheduled from April 18 through 20, 2024.

In another impressive feat, Garcia set a new VI National record in the 10,000 Meters at the Cooper River Bridge 10K Run in Charleston, South Carolina. Among over 26,000 athletes, Garcia finished 15th with a time of 29:31. Garcia is now focusing on qualifying for the Olympic Games in the Marathon, to be held in Paris, France. His next event will be the Half Marathon in Istanbul on April 28, 2024, where he aims to continue his excellent form.

In related news, Malique Smith, another member of the Virgin Islands Track and Field Team, showed strong performances in the 400m Hurdles. Smith secured a commendable third place in his heat at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida, on March 29, clocking in at 51.40 seconds. He continued to compete at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, where he finished eighth in his heat with a time of 53.27 on April 12. Smith looks forward to competing next at the Pure Athletics Invitational in Clermont, FL, on April 20, 2024.
