The reigning Miss Universe, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, received a spirited Virgin Islands welcome at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on Friday afternoon, September 26.
Theilvig, 21, who made history as the first Miss Universe from Denmark, has been visiting St. Croix for several days. On hand to greet her at the airport were a moko jumbie and a cultural dancer, showcasing two of the territory’s iconic traditions. Senator Angel Bolques Jr. was also present, as was community personality Tyrique Evans, widely known as “Big Man Pas,” who asked the reigning queen a series of questions in front of the gathered audience.
Theilvig expressed her excitement at being in the Virgin Islands, noting its connection to her home country. “It’s my first time here, and it’s actually a part of Denmark. So that is so lovely. I’m super excited to visit your beautiful country, to experience the people here, the culture and everything. We’re gonna have some amazing days here, I know for sure,” she said.
Evans highlighted the historic relationship between Denmark and the Virgin Islands, and asked Theilvig how it felt to carry such a legacy for her nation. “I am extremely, extremely honored to bring the crown home to Denmark from the first time standing here today, 21 years old and making history. It’s just something I’m super, super proud of,” she said.
When asked if she had received any tips on what to do while in St. Croix, Theilvig said she was eager to experience everything the Virgin Islands had to offer. Evans suggested she try the island’s famous coconut tarts, and pair them with a Vita Malt — a beverage produced in Denmark.
Recalling her first impressions stepping off the plane, Theilvig remarked on the natural beauty of the territory. “Just looking outside the plane, seeing the ocean, all the beautiful nature you have as well, absolutely beautiful. I love the warmth and I love the environment. So I was like, the people here must be as warm as the environment. So I’m so excited to connect with each and every one.”
Asked what she hoped to take away from her visit, Theilvig said, “That I would leave this territory with my heart full of the people from this incredible island.”
Evans reminded the public that the Miss Universe USVI pageant will be held at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Sunday, September 28, at 6 p.m. He encouraged residents to attend to see who will represent the territory at the next global competition.
According to Jaielean Jagrup, CEO of Miss USVI, the airport celebration was held after torrential rainfall had forced the cancellation of an earlier arrival ceremony.
