Members of the V.I. Fire Service and St. John Rescue participated in a joint training focused on the use of rope rescue equipment in a low-angle environment during the week of Feb. 7, V.I.F.S. has announced.

According to the release, the training was part two of a three-part training plan that is centered around responding to vehicle rescue incidents where special equipment may be needed to gain access to the site of an accident. Such incidents may occur when a vehicle leaves the roadway and tumbles down an embankment, the Fire Service said.

Last week’s joint training was conducted by the VIFS Training Division with support from St. John Rescue and met National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, specifically NFPA 2500. It provided members of both organizations the opportunity to develop and maintain the technical skills necessary to use rope rescue equipment while responding to vehicle rescue incidents.

Due to the terrain, these types of incidents can present special challenges and can make patient care more difficult, the release stated. Trainings like these make rescue operations safer for first responders and the community, and they help to ensure patients can be transported to the hospital as quickly as possible.

“Now that we have begun to build out our training division, we anticipate that this will be the first of many joint training sessions with other first responder organizations,” said VIFS Director Daryl George.
