ST. THOMAS — The V.I. Police Department on Wednesday morning confirmed the death of a 4-month-old infant in St. Thomas Tuesday night, while the child's mother was receiving intensive care at the Schneider Regional Medical Center.

The girl child's death and the mother's injuries — the mother was on life support as of 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to police — occurred in the area of Oasis Cove Marina in Frydenhoj, St. Thomas, with emergency response personnel responding to the incident at about 7:47 p.m. Tuesday.

Detectives with the V.I.P.D.'s Criminal Investigation Bureau were still on the scene Wednesday morning examining CCTV footage and receiving statements in an effort to determine what happened. Police sources have said that the tragic incident may have been criminally motivated, however the V.I.P.D. as of Wednesday morning said it had not made a decision on the nature of incident.

Emergency response units on the scene included St. Thomas Rescue, the V.I. Police Department, and V.I. Fire EMS. Upon their arrival, rescue officers, firefighters, and Good Samaritans rescued the adult female from the water and began lifesaving measures.

As further information was received, emergency personnel were made aware that a child was also missing, according to St. Thomas Rescue. Shortly after, a baby approximately four months old was also recovered from the water.

Both patients were transported to SRMC, where the child was pronounced dead, and the mother as of this morning was receiving intensive care.

The V.I.P.D. described the investigation as fluid and said more details will be provided as the day progresses.
