Current outlook in the tropical Atlantic.
A tropical wave currently located over the far eastern tropical Atlantic is showing signs of potential development, and its current path is threatening to bring severe weather to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean islands later this week.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the system is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorm activity to the south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.
Environmental conditions are conducive for some gradual development of this system, and there is a high likelihood that it will form into a tropical depression. The system is expected to move westward to west-northwestward at speeds of 15 to 20 mph over the eastern and central portions of the tropical Atlantic.
As of the latest reports, the NHC estimates the formation chance through the next 48 hours to be low at 30 percent. However, the formation chance ramps up significantly over the course of the next week, currently standing at a high 70 percent.
Given the developing system's current trajectory, residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean islands are advised to closely monitor updates and prepare for potential severe weather impacts. It is still too early to determine the exact path or intensity of the system, but its current course indicates that it could pose a significant threat to these regions.
