The National Hurricane Center Saturday morning has reported an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity associated with a tropical wave currently situated approximately halfway between the Cabo Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles. This system, which is moving westward to west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic, has shown some potential for gradual development over the next couple of days.

While immediate development is expected to be slow, conditions are predicted to become more favorable for the system’s growth by early to mid-next week. The NHC indicates that a tropical depression is likely to form during this period as the wave approaches and potentially moves near or over the Lesser Antilles.

The tropical wave is expected to continue its west-northwestward trajectory, with forecasts suggesting it could reach portions of the Greater Antilles by the middle to latter part of next week. The NHC has provided the following formation chances for the system:

  • Formation chance through 48 hours: Low, at 20 percent.
  • Formation chance through 7 days: High, at 80 percent.

Residents in the Lesser and Greater Antilles are advised to stay informed and monitor updates from the NHC as the situation develops.
