The National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring two weather disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean that have the potential to develop into tropical depressions in the coming days.
The first system, labeled AL92, is located in the central tropical Atlantic. Showers and thunderstorms associated with this elongated area of low pressure have shown gradual signs of organization, with environmental conditions appearing conducive for further development. According to the NHC, a tropical depression could form as AL92 continues to meander over the central Atlantic through Monday, before shifting westward at approximately 10 mph for the remainder of the week.
As of the 2 a.m. Sunday update, the NHC gives the system a 30 percent chance of formation within the next 48 hours, and a 50 percent chance of formation over the next seven days.
In addition to AL92, a second disturbance located in the eastern and central tropical Atlantic, southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, is also under observation. This system consists of a trough of low pressure producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The disturbance is not expected to move significantly over the next couple of days, as it may interact with a tropical wave forecast to move off the coast of Africa by early Monday.
Environmental conditions are expected to become favorable for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form by the middle to latter part of the week as the system begins to move slowly westward. Currently, the NHC assigns the system a near-zero chance of formation within the next 48 hours, but a 50 percent chance of development within the next seven days.
As the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season approaches, residents and stakeholders across the Caribbean and U.S. East Coast are advised to closely monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center. It is important to remain prepared and informed as these systems continue to evolve.
