The National Hurricane Center has issued an advisory concerning Hurricane Tammy, which is rapidly advancing toward the Leeward Islands. The hurricane poses threats of heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and dangerous wind speeds.

Key Details from the 5:00 p.m. AST Advisory:

  • Location: Approximately 125 miles east southeast of Martinique and about 200 miles southeast of Guadeloupe.
  • Wind Speed: Sustained winds of 75 mph, with stronger gusts expected.
  • Movement: West-northwest at 7 mph. A shift toward the northwest is predicted for tonight, with north-northwestward and northward turns forecasted through the weekend.
  • Central Pressure: Estimated at 991 mb (29.27 inches).

Current Watches and Warnings:

  • Hurricane Warning for Guadeloupe; Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Anguilla; St. Maarten; St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.
  • Hurricane Watch for Dominica.
  • Tropical Storm Warning for Dominica and Saba and St. Eustatius.
  • Tropical Storm Watch for Barbados and Martinique.

Residents in the affected areas are strongly advised to finalize their preparations to protect life and property, as hazardous conditions are expected within the next 24 hours.

Potential Hazards:

  • Wind: Tropical storm conditions are predicted to commence tonight. Areas within the hurricane warning should brace for hurricane conditions by tonight or early Saturday.
  • Rainfall: Forecasted storm total rainfall for the Leeward Islands is between 4 to 8 inches, with maximums reaching up to 12 inches. Northern Windward Islands may witness 2 to 4 inches, with peaks of 6 inches. The British and U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as eastern Puerto Rico, could see 1 to 2 inches, with maximum amounts reaching 4 inches. This could lead to isolated flash and urban flooding, especially in regions with elevated terrain.
  • Storm Surge: Coastal areas might experience water levels rising 1 to 3 feet above regular tide levels due to storm surges, accompanied by large, perilous waves.
  • Surf: Swells produced by Tammy pose life-threatening conditions, including hazardous surf and rip currents. Residents are advised to heed local weather advisories.
