As temperatures are predicted to spike into the mid-90s over the weekend, Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion has urged the public to maintain hydration and seek cool environments.
The National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Watch for the USVI and Puerto Rico as of 5 p.m. today, a warning that is set to continue through to Sunday afternoon. With the mercury expected to reach a sweltering 94 degrees Fahrenheit and remnants of Saharan Dust particles lingering across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the authorities are stressing caution.
"Heat exhaustion, which can escalate to heatstroke, is a serious risk during such excessive heat," warned Encarnacion. "We advise everyone to drink plenty of water and stay in cool places. It's vital to ensure young children, the elderly, and pets in your household do the same, as they're particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of high heat."
The commissioner also advises those with asthma, chronic lung disease, and other respiratory illnesses to minimize their outdoor exposure. If unavoidable, they should aim to be outside in the early hours of the day and limit their physical activity.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, thirst, sweating, nausea, and weakness should not be overlooked. In response to the impending heatwave, the Department of Health has issued the following guidelines:
- Stay Hydrated: Increase your fluid intake irrespective of your thirst level. Refrain from consuming alcohol and caffeine as they can induce dehydration.
- Stay Cool: Seek air-conditioned, cool spaces during the peak heat hours of the day, whenever possible.
- Dress Appropriately: Opt for loose, lightweight clothing along with a hat to shield your head and face.
- Take it Easy: Steer clear of strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Check on Others: Regularly check on older relatives, friends, or neighbors to ensure their well-being.
- Know the signs of a heat stroke: Heat stroke is a severe condition that necessitates immediate medical help. Symptoms comprise high body temperature, confusion, and loss of consciousness.
- Seek Medical Attention If Necessary: If you experience dizziness, nausea, or any other signs of heat exhaustion, don't hesitate to seek medical attention immediately.
In these high temperatures, vigilance and proactive prevention are key to maintaining health and well-being.
