The V.I. Department of Health, Division of Environmental Health Services (V.I.D.E.H.) is warning restaurant and retailers to be aware of a scam involving individuals impersonating health or food inspectors.
The imposters have asked for sensitive information or attempt to schedule an inspection, and often threaten the establishment with large fines and closures.
Real V.I.D.E.H. inspectors carry photo identification specifying their employment with either the V.I. Department of Health, the G2S Corporation or P3S Corporation, both of which are contractors to the department.
The environmental health services division encourages business owners to request proper identification from anyone claiming to be an inspector before providing any information or otherwise cooperating with the individual.
Any business that suspects they have been contacted by a phony inspector is urged to report the incident to the Virgin Islands Police Department or to the Virgin Islands Department of Health, Division of Environmental Health Services at 340-718-1311 ext. 3709 or 340-774-9000 ext. 4642.
