Governor Albert Bryan, Jr.

The local state of emergency actioned because of the water crisis on St. Croix has been extended until December 29, Gov't House has announced.

The Bryan administration said Friday that Acting Governor Kevin McCurdy signed an executive order on November 29, which renews the existing state of emergency for another 30 days.

The previous order was signed by Governor Albert Bryan Jr. on October 30th, declaring a state of emergency on St. Croix. The order came weeks after test results pointed to potential heavy metal contamination in the island's potable water distribution system. On November 18, President Joe Biden followed with a federal emergency declaration.

Despite subsequent skepticism about the validity of the initial alarming test results, the local government has decided to maintain the current response efforts – distributing vouchers for the purchase of safe drinking water, conducting lead testing among younger demographics, and sourcing filtration solutions for homeowners.
