ST. THOMAS — Days after a meeting with industry stakeholders brought tensions to the fore, the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission has announced the date its offices will re-open for business.
Closed since late March due to air quality issues inside the office space, the TCC office in Subbase on St. Thomas will reopen on June 5, according to an announcement circulated by TCC Executive Director Vernice Gumbs.
According to the announcement, in the hours after the meeting on Monday May 8, ”the offices of TCC in Subbase were deemed sanitized, free of contaminants and the keys turned over so that we may proceed with the final preparations for reopening.”
Ahead of June 5, the TCC will be performing the last steps for a safe reopening. “Any alleged contaminated furniture is being removed, disposed of and replaced by surplus furniture from the GVI,” the commission said.
TCC’s statement closed by thanking stakeholders for their “patience and understanding” through the disruption.
The organization has been heavily criticized – during Monday’s meeting and prior – about its casual approach to its business and obligations. The organization’s governing board came in for scrutiny this week, with some criticizing the body’s absence at that key stakeholder meeting on Monday.
Following the meeting, Senators Angel Bolques Jr. and Donna Frett-Gregory wrote jointly to Governor Albert Bryan Jr. imploring him to take quick action to re-nominate or replace board members whose tenure has long expired.
Governor Bryan has not yet responded publicly to the correspondence.
