Chairman of the Committee of Finance, Senator Kurt Vialet, was complementary of the Commissioner of the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation, Calvert White, when discussing how his department effectively followed protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in two separate incidents when campers tested positive for the virus.
Mr. Vialet told the Commissioner “I know you had a break out on St. Croix, which was handled really well, I read the press release etc. you did a really great job.” and then asked him if there was a similar incident on St. Thomas.

Mr. White explained that there was not an outbreak because of the protocols that were followed. Mr. Vialet then said “the protocol you had on St. Croix, after the incident, parents were notified, press release was put out, camp was closed for a day I think it was, then it resumed. Did you follow that same protocol for the incident that was on St. Thomas?”
Mr. White said “It was the same protocol” and that the Department of Health was able to determine that the camper didn’t contract the virus at the camp.
The child traveled and took a Covid-19 test before he left that was negative and before the camper would have been allowed to return to the camp they were asked for a new negative test. The second test was positive and the camper was not allowed to return to camp according to Mr. White.
Mr. White said that the Department of Health “deemed that child was not in camp at the time when they probably contracted it.”
