The V.I. Housing Authority has announced the launch of the 2023 Landlord Incentive Program to help address the shortage of housing units available for rent in the territory.
The program aims to reward private landlords who rent their qualified units to Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) applicants and participants.
According to the VIHA release, under the program, landlords who initiate a new contract with an HCVP applicant or participant will receive a one-time $1,000 incentive bonus. If a landlord owns multiple units or a building with several units, each unit leased to an HCVP applicant or participant will receive the incentive bonus. The program is available until all funds are exhausted and is only applicable to new contracts executed between June 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023.
The HCVP is a program that assists families in finding suitable housing units of their choice from private landlords. With the ongoing shortage of available units for rent, families continue to find it challenging to locate affordable rental units.
The Landlord Incentive Program is designed to address this issue and incentivize landlords to help HCVP families find housing. In addition to providing housing, HCVP families are an essential part of the Virgin Islands economy, paying rent, taxes, and supporting local businesses, the authority said. They are also a part of the Islands' social fabric and contribute to the legacy that makes the Virgin Islands great.

The program is expected to provide much-needed support to HCVP families and private landlords alike and help address the ongoing housing shortage in the Virgin Islands.
