On Monday, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced the nomination of Vincent Roberts for the post of commissioner of the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation.
“Mr. Roberts has given more than 18 years of dedicated service, and has shown real leadership every step of the way,” Governor Bryan said during the weekly press briefing from Government House.
He noted the current assistant commissioner’s rise through the ranks, starting off as sports coordinator. Along the way, Mr. Roberts has consistently showed “a deep commitment to youth, community engagement, and improving our recreation spaces,” the governor said.
Mr. Bryan pointed to his nominee’s background in sports management and construction, along with his private sector experience as making Mr. Roberts eminently qualified to head DSPR. “I’m confident he is ready to lead the department forward and expand recreational opportunities across the territory.” The governor called on the Legislature to act quickly to approve Mr. Roberts’ nomination.
The assistant commissioner spoke briefly following the announcement of his nomination on Monday. “The Department has made great strides in the past six years…and it’s my duty and my privilege to continue leading and building on those successes,” he declared. Mr. Roberts said that he is particularly keen to make progress on rolling out health and fitness programs across the territory.
Mr. Roberts’s opportunity to lead DSPR comes after the resignation of his predecessor Calvert White, who is currently battling fraud and bribery charges in U.S. District Court.
