As the body of former Senator Alicia "Chucky" Hansen lay in state at the V.I. Legislature on St. Croix on Thurdsay, with funeral service and burial scheduled for Friday, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced that all U.S. Virgin Islands flags will be flown at half-staff on Friday, October 20, to honor the memory and service of the legendary political figure.

After family members were given time to pay their respects during the viewing at the Legislature, residents poured into the facility to do the same, with Hansen's open casket, draped in the U.S. Virgin Islands flag, was flanked by two Capitol Police officers.

Governor Bryan's mandate requires that flags on Government House and all public buildings and grounds throughout the territory be lowered from sunrise to sunset. Further, he has encouraged private building owners within the territory to follow suit by lowering their U.S. Virgin Islands flags in tribute to the late senator.

Senator Hansen, who departed on October 2, 2023, was a dedicated public servant to the people of the Virgin Islands. Her career in the Senate spanned 11 terms, starting with the 17th Legislature and most recently, the 32nd Legislature.

Reflecting on her legacy, Governor Bryan remarked in his proclamation that Senator Hansen "was a fearless advocate for the people of the Virgin Islands, a true champion, and an unwavering voice for her constituents."
