Bosede Bruce, announced as Dept. of Finance Commissioner just over one year ago, has been removed from the role by Governor Albert Bryan Jr., the Consortium can confirm.
Rumor had been circulating since late April during the carnival season of Bosede's removal, though we only received irrefutable information about her dismissal today.
"She's out," Governor Bryan confirmed to the Consortium, providing no further details or context behind the reason for her firing. Bruce is said to have informed staff members of her removal sometime this week.
Clarina Modeste-Elliott is acting commissioner, the governor confirmed to VIC.
Bryan and Bruce have butted heads on several matters, and people familiar with the situation said she openly contested the governor during a recent meeting, amplifying his discontent.
On April 19, 2022, Bruce was announced by Bryan as D.O.F. commissioner-nominee after having "recognized her extraordinary talent and ability to think and her tenacity."
For her part, Bruce said at the time, "I'm looking forward to taking a deep dive in learning the department in and out, and working with the staff. I look forward to a successful confirmation and a productive tenure."
In a release following our report Wednesday night, Government House said Ms. Bruce tendered her resignation from the administration "effective immediately."
In her resignation letter, she wrote, “I loved working with and leading this hard-working group. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the people of the Virgin Islands."
Bryan, in the Gov't House statement, wished Bruce well. “I am grateful for Commissioner Bruce’s service to the people of this Territory while serving as Finance Commissioner in the Bryan-Roach administration and wish her the best in her future endeavors," he said.
