Holsum de Puerto Rico, Inc. has recalled approximately 9,602 packages of spinach flour tortillas distributed in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands because the products contain two artificial color additives that were not disclosed on their labels, according to a recall classified Wednesday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall involves Holsum Spinach Flour Tortillas Large, sold in eight-count packages weighing 20 ounces, with the universal product code (UPC) 810023430629. The affected tortillas contain FD&C Blue No. 1 and FD&C Yellow No. 5, two color additives that federal regulations require manufacturers to identify on food labels.
The company, based in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, initiated the voluntary recall on September 28. The FDA classified it as a Class II recall on October 14, indicating that consuming the affected product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, while the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is considered remote.
The labeling issue is particularly relevant to consumers who are sensitive to artificial food colorings. According to the FDA, FD&C Yellow No. 5, also known as tartrazine, can cause allergic-type reactions, including itching and hives, in some individuals. The agency requires certified food color additives to be identified on ingredient labels so consumers can make informed decisions about the products they purchase.

The recall covers nine production lots, with expiration dates ranging from October 4 through December 17, 2026.
The affected lot numbers and their corresponding expiration dates are:

The approximately 9,602 recalled packages represent the combined distribution across Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The FDA's publicly available recall information does not identify how many packages were shipped specifically to the territory or which local supermarkets and retailers received them.
Consumers who purchased the affected Holsum spinach tortillas should check the UPC, lot number and expiration date on their packages. Those with recalled products should not consume them and should return them to the place of purchase or discard them.
The recall remains ongoing, according to federal records. It was initiated by Holsum de Puerto Rico, Inc., and is being monitored by the FDA
