ST. CROIX — Inconspicuous for much of its construction phase, a massive new mall on St. Croix located across from the former Sunshine Mall in Frederiksted is nearing completion and is scheduled to open in December.

That's according to mall owner Zephyriaus "Zefo" Thomas, the well-known developer on St. Croix with a number of investments on the island.

Tentatively named the Millennium Mall, the facility will initially have 30 spaces that will host a variety of businesses, along with a Bank of St. Croix branch. With planned additions, however, the mall will eventually have 60 spaces and a small amusement park on the north side.

Mr. Thomas said negotiations are ongoing with several U.S.-based franchises, including restaurants for operations at the mall, as well as Puerto Rico firms that have shown strong interest. The established entrepreneur further stated that locals who'd like to open businesses in the mall are encouraged to call 340-277-8246.

Upon completion, the mall will be the first major facility with retail outlets and restaurants to open since the closure of the Sunshine Mall, ironically located across the street from the Millennium Mall. St. Croix's other major retail facility is the Sunny Isle Shopping Center, which was opened in 1970 and is among the most recognizable shopping locations in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
