ST. CROIX -- A minor died this afternoon in a tragic highway accident after the horse he was riding was struck by a Dodge Ram truck heading west at about 4:40 p.m., in the vicinity of the Williams Delight stoplights, VI Consortium can confirm.
Police received notification of the accident at approximately 4:45 p.m., and the minor, who has already been positively identified by his mother, was pronounced dead on the scene at about 5:45 p.m.
Police Officer Arthur Joseph, on the scene of the incident, told VI Consortium that a witness said the minor, a 14-year-old black male whose identity police will not reveal, was attempting to cross from south to north and was struck by the fast-moving Dodge truck.
The female driver of the truck was transported via ambulance to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center to receive care.
Police blocked highway intersections from Paradise to Carlton as ambulances made their way to the scene. The rush hour traffic was backed up from the Carlton stoplights all the way to the Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road).
The VIPD is continuing its investigation into the incident.
