Efforts to remediate the Tutu Wellfield Superfund site are moving ahead with the selection of a contractor to perform remediation work.

Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency awarded environmental remediation specialists Conti Federal Services a task order contract in the amount of $18.5 million to perform the work.
According to the announcement from Conti, “the contract…will focus on the source area groundwater contamination at the USVI Department of Education Curriculum Center property.” The work is expected to include installation of extraction, injection and monitoring wells, and upgrading the existing pump system. The project is expected to be completed in June 2031.
“We look forward to applying our innovative solutions to improve groundwater quality, a critical resource, for this community,” said Laura Tobin, Conti Federal's Vice President, Environmental Business Line Leader.
The company's previous work in the territory includes an award-winning COVID-19 Alternate Care Facility, which in 2021 was completed on St. Croix in only 22 days and won recognition for that feat from Engineering News-Record.

Funding for the project comes from President Biden's Investing in America agenda. The Tutu Wellfield site, contaminated by industrial pollution from textile manufacturing and dry cleaning operations, was earmarked for this latest cleanup effort by the EPA last year.
