With the registration deadline for the November general election approaching, the V.I. Board of Elections will hold voter registration drives this week on St. Thomas and St. Croix, including opportunities for students and young adults to learn about the electoral process and use the territory's voting equipment.
The first drive is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School cafeteria on St. Thomas. In addition to registering eligible students and other residents, the event will give 11th- and 12th-grade students an opportunity to learn about elections and experience voting with Express Vote and DS 200 machines, according to the Board of Elections. The drive is being conducted in collaboration with the school's Social Studies Department.
A second registration drive will take place Wednesday, September 30, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the University of the Virgin Islands' Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The Board said the evening event is intended to give young adults an opportunity to become more informed about the electoral process while also trying the Express Vote and DS 200 voting machines. It is being held in collaboration with the Nu Chi Zeta Graduate Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
People registering at either event must present an original birth certificate, U.S. passport, military discharge form — DD214 — or naturalization certificate. Copies will not be accepted.
Under Elections System requirements, a person registering to vote in the Virgin Islands must be a U.S. citizen, meet the territory's residency requirements and be at least 18 years old — or turn 18 before the next election — along with meeting the other eligibility requirements established by law. The Elections System also lists the same four forms of original documentation contained in the two registration-drive announcements.
The outreach events come days before the registration cutoff for the November 3, 2026 General Election. Supervisor of Elections Caroline F. Fawkes announced last week that residents must register by Sunday, October 4 to participate in the election. The Elections System's online voter-registration portal will close earlier, at 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, to allow officials time to verify and process applications before the statutory deadline.
Residents who do not register online by Oct. 2 may still register in person at Elections System offices on St. Croix and St. Thomas from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, and 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 4, according to the Elections System.
