The V.I. Board of Education on Friday announced that online application is open for the $1,000 Coronavirus Supplemental Scholarship program to all high schools, home education or home schools, adult education, and general education development (GED) graduates of Spring 2020 and Spring 2021.

Governor Albert Bryan announced the program back in May 2020, which was implemented using funds from the $75 million in Covid-19 funding provided to the territory by the U.S. Treasury as part of the CARES Act. The governor had set aside $1 million for the program, but told the Consortium Monday morning that students had only applied for a third of the money.

According to the Board of Education, eligible participants must be permanent residents of the V.I.; resided in the territory at the time of graduation; and have been accepted into or are attending a college, university, or other post-secondary education or advanced vocational or trade school.

The deadline to apply is August 13.

New applicants (graduates of the class of 2020 who did not receive a scholarship last year, along with graduates of the class of 2021), must take the following steps:

  • Complete a V.I. Board of Education application online at www.myviboe.com
  • Submit a letter indicating how the graduate has been affected by the pandemic
  • Submit proof of graduation from a V.I. high school, Home Education or Home School, Adult Education, or GED program
  • Submit an acceptance letter

Returning applicants (graduates of the class of 2020 who received a scholarship last year), must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete a V.I. Board of Education application online at www.myviboe.com
  • Submit a letter indicating how the graduate has been affected by the pandemic
  • Submit an official transcript
