Educators in the U.S. Virgin Islands now have additional time to meet professional certification requirements thanks to an extension of the Virgin Islands Board of Education’s (VIBE) one-time amnesty program. The initiative, which offers significant flexibility for those facing certification or recertification challenges, will remain available through December 31, 2025.

The amnesty applies to two groups: conditional certificate holders and educators seeking recertification.

For those with expired conditional certificates, the program provides a penalty-free three-year extension. This gives educators extra time to fulfill outstanding requirements such as coursework, testing, or teaching experience.

For those seeking recertification, the board has reduced the required professional development hours from 125 to 75, a temporary change to ease the burden on active educators.

“This initiative reflects our deep commitment to empowering educators, equipping them with the tools to succeed in the classroom, and fostering a brighter future for our students,” said Dr. Kyza A. Callwood, Chairperson of the Board.

The amnesty program is part of a broader effort by VIBE to support professional growth in the teaching workforce through adjusted standards and streamlined processes.
