The University of the Virgin Islands will welcome new and transfer students for the 2024 Fall Semester with a series of events and orientation sessions on both campuses, the university said Thursday.

On the Orville E. Kean Campus in St. Thomas, orientation sessions will be held at the Elridge W. Blake Sports and Fitness Center. The first session, specifically for students from St. Thomas and St. John, is scheduled for Saturday, August 10. A second session for all students will occur on August 14. Both sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will host its welcome activities starting on Thursday, August 15, at 9 a.m. in the Northwest Wing Great Hall. Orientation will continue the following day with move-in for new and transfer students beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Dr. Camille McKayle, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, encouraged new students to explore all available resources during orientation, including Student Affairs offices, the Dean's Office, Counseling and Career Services, Residence Life, Student Life, and Health Services. “Welcoming our new and transfer students to campus is one of the highlights of the academic cycle. It is a unique opportunity to give them a hearty Buccaneer welcome while introducing them to the diversity of opportunities available at UVI and begin to get them acclimated to campus life,” said Dr. McKayle.

According to UVI, orientation activities will feature campus tours, introductions to essential resources such as the computer lab, library, Health Services, residence halls, and Information Technology. Students will also participate in lunch on campus, presentations about campus security, and sessions on financial aid, enrollment resources, clubs, and organizations. A portion of the time will be dedicated to faculty advisement, course selection, and financial aid matters.

The New Student Convocation on the Orville E. Kean Campus will take place on Thursday, August 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Albert A. Sheen Campus will hold its convocation on Saturday, August 17, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. The convocation is a formal ceremony welcoming new students to the university.

Throughout the orientation week, several activities are planned, including island tours, hiking, and other recreational events designed to welcome students, provide social opportunities, and help them adjust to campus life, UVI said. For more details and updates on planned events, students can visit UVI Orientation or UVI's official website.

Dr. Leslyn Tonge, dean of students on the Orville E. Kean Campus, extended a heartfelt welcome to all new and transfer students. “On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs, I extend a warm welcome to all our new and transfer students. We want them to know that we are here to support them every step of the way and are confident that they will find UVI a place where they can grow, learn, and achieve their goals," she said.

Classes for the Fall Semester will commence on both UVI campuses on Monday, August 19, 2024.
