On Monday, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands announced that local high school students with an interest in space and other STEM fields can now apply for the Blake and Karen Rapier Space Scholarship.
The scholarship, funded by investment firm RapierMed, will cover the cost to attend Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama. “The Space Camp experience immerses trainees in a setting rich with space, aviation, and defense exhibits that ignite creativity,” the CFVI said in a press release.
Mission simulations encourage camp attendees in the 42-year old program to develop teamwork skills and hone leadership and decision-making abilities, according to CFVI. Over 700,000 eager students from the United States and across the world have matriculated through the program, which is reportedly modeled on NASA's astronaut training program.
“We are proud to support this initiative, opening doors for the territory's brightest minds,” said RapierMed Vice President Trey Goldsmith. “We encourage high school students across the Virgin Islands to apply.”
Eligible candidates must have a GPA of at least 3.2, and have completed at least two advanced courses in subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Engineering. Applicants should also be able to show participation in two or more extracurricular activities relating to STEM or space exploration. Applications must be submitted online before February 21, 2025.
