ST. THOMAS — The Office of the Governor, in conjunction with the Virgin Islands Department of Education are inviting students in the St. Thomas-St. John District who completed the 11th Annual Governor's Summer Reading Challenge, June 6 to September 20, to attend a day of fun from 2-5 p.m. on Sun., Dec. 22 at Lockhart Elementary School.
According to the Dept. of Education, the invitation-only event will celebrate students’ achievement of reading five or more books during the summer months. Students turn in book tracking sheets to their teachers at the end of the three-month Challenge and receive an invitation to the annual celebration.
The fun day will include a variety of activities, including face painting, arts and crafts, games, music, food, and more. In addition, the school with the most readers will receive special recognition. Local agencies and non-profits will also be present, D.O.E. said.
The Governor's Summer Reading Challenge invites students in grades K-6 attending public and private schools to read five or more books during the summer months. While the activity takes place in states across the U.S., in the Virgin Islands, students receive up to two grade-level books that are written and illustrated by Virgin Islands or Caribbean authors and illustrators.
