Rayan Felix and Evan Fahie Win District Titles, Set Sights on Territorial Spelling Bee Competition

The V.I. Dept. of Education has announced the winners of the  District Spelling Bee competitions, which took place on St. Croix and St. Thomas on Thursday. The competitions saw 24 students from across the districts demonstrate their spelling skills and intellectual depth in a series of challenging rounds.

Evan Fahie, representing Lockhart K-8 School, won the St. Thomas-St. John District competition, while Rayan Felix from Free Will Baptist Christian School triumphed in the St. Croix District. Both champions are now set to compete in the Territorial Competition on March 19, 2024, in St. Croix. They will be among a total of 12 students vying for the title of USVI Territorial Champion.

Finalists for the St. Croix District include Chasidy Pickering (Pearl B. Larsen), Joseph Greaux (Eulalie Rivera), Jasem Rahhal (Good Hope Country Day School), J’adora Burke (Ricardo Richards), and Layla Jacobs (St. Patrick's Catholic School). For the St. Thomas-St. John District, finalists are Kaiden Lettsome-Dowe (Antilles), Eli Blash (Moravian), Amera Paul (Calvary Christian), Kashyma Paul, Yvonne Bowsky, and Kwalane Flemming (Ulla Muller School).

Education Commissioner Dionne Wells-Hedrington expressed admiration for the participants: “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the students who participated in this esteemed competition. Your passion for learning and your dedication to mastering the intricacies of language are truly commendable.”

D.O.E. also thanked the schools, teachers, coaches, parents, and guardians for their support, along with sponsors. D.OE. highlighted the significance of the Spelling Bee in promoting literacy and communication skills, which are essential for shaping future leaders.
