Regional winners of the National Science Bowl competition in the USVI.
Five students of the St. Croix Educational Complex High School (SCECHS) are now preparing for the National Science Bowl finals after winning the first virtual science quiz bowl in the USVI earlier this month.
SCECHS Team B picked up from when the last science bowl was held in 2016, bringing home the school’s ninth consecutive science quiz bowl victory, a testament to the educational institution’s continuing commitment to academic excellence.
Jayden Ferdinad, Ryan Ferdinand Jr., Dominique Jenkins, Samir Boucena and Martin Fevrier Jr. can now anticipate an all-expenses paid trip to the William F. Bolger Center in Maryland, where they will participate in the Finals of the 2023 Department of Energy Office of Science National Science Bowl. There, the team is expected to answer questions about mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, energy, and earth and space science, all calibrated to the college freshman level.
From April 27 to May 1, teams from middle schools and high schools across the nation will converge in Washington DC to take part in the Science Bowl Finals as well as a number of enrichment activities including museum visits, science seminars, and academic review sessions for AP testing.
The ten students who participated in the local event will receive plaques, t-shirts, and commemorative hoodies as mementos of their hard work and commitment.
According to SCECHS, monetary contributions in support of the regional science bowl were received from several education- and science-minded individual and corporate sponsors, including Senator Kenneth Gittens, Jamie Gugger of Aline Printing, J. Benton Construction, Haugland Virgin Islands, and Vernon Alexander.
