Following all-day competitions on Sunday at the University of the Virgin Islands' Great Hall on St. Croix, two teams emerged as champions of the 2024 Virgin Islands Regional Science Bowl, qualifying them for the national championship in Washington, DC, from April 25-29.
Church of God Holiness Academy won the regional competition in the middle school category, while the St. Croix Educational Complex Team 2 won in the high school category. Competitions started at 10:00 a.m. but the final battle — between Complex Teams 1 & 2 — did not conclude until 7:20 p.m.
Sixteens teams consisting of a combined 80 students from across the territory participated, according to Science Bowl Coordinator for the St. Croix District, Joann Lewis. "We're so happy that the students came out and showed out," she said, adding that the competition "allows our students to show and demonstrate skills in the sciences."
Like the regional competition in the territory, teams across the United States are competing for the top spot. The format is designed to challenge students and encourage teamwork, quick thinking, and a deep understanding of scientific principles.
The National Science Bowl is sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of Energy, and represents a culmination of the best regional teams who compete in a rigorous academic showdown. The event is a testament to the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and showcases the remarkable talents of American students. Since its inception in 1991, the National Science Bowl® has been a cornerstone of the Department of Energy’s commitment to supporting educational programs in the STEM fields and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
According to the V.I. Dept. of Education, participating school teams in the Middle School Division include Lockhart K-8 School, Church of God of Holiness Academy, Eulalie Rivera Elementary School, Juanita Gardine Elementary School, and the Pearl B. Larson Elementary School. High School teams include Charlotte Amalie High School, Ivanna Eudora Kean, St. Croix Central, St. Croix Seventh Day Adventist, and St. Croix Educational Complex.
