The V.I. Department of Education on Friday made public its ongoing efforts in a series of maintenance repairs and improvement projects across public schools in the St. Croix District.
These initiatives, which follow several student-led protests in September of last year, aim to enhance the learning environments by addressing the many deficiencies of the educational structures.
The projects, managed by the district's Operations, Facilities, and Maintenance Divisions, cover a wide range of improvements, according to D.O.E. — from essential maintenance to significant infrastructure upgrades.
Key areas of focus include safety enhancements, repairs to restrooms, tile installations, leaking roofs, air quality in classrooms, security, and improvements to outdoor facilities, along with a multitude of other upgrades. The department has laid out 30-day and 60-day timelines for these projects, with the longer duration for larger projects.
There are several completed tasks in both categories, however, more work remains beyond what has already been completed, and this effort is projected to continue into the coming months as some of the work that needs to be done is still out for bid. See improvements document here.
