Students of the St. Croix Educational Complex High School are the 2023 Civics Matters champions, after winning the finals of the event held on Saturday at the University of the Virgin Islands Albert A. Sheen Campus Great Hall.
The championship, the culmination of the Election System of the Virgin Islands' (ESVI) 60th Anniversary celebration, was the finale of the inaugural year of "Civics Matters", an engaging quiz show produced exclusively for Virgin Islands’ high school students. The show's objective is to assess the students' grasp of diverse social, political, and historical subjects.
The final showdown was between the Charlotte Amalie High School and the St. Croix Educational Complex High School. Representatives from each school demonstrated commendable subject matter knowledge over three tightly contested rounds, but ultimately, it was the Complex team – Yadayyah Leo, Xaire Simmons, A’Nyra Richards, and Safiya Prasad – who emerged as winners, under the guidance of Diana Garcia and Nichelle Stanley as coaches.
An elated Lisa Harris-Moorhead, chair of the Education Committee on the Board of Elections, thanked all students, coaches, and everyone else involved in making the first annual Civics Matters Bowl a resounding success.
"The Civic Matters Bowl turned out 300% better than anyone expected," she said. "Everyone's contribution was greatly appreciated. ESVI continues to receive nothing but positive praise."
The event remains available for viewing on ESVI's social media platforms.
