ST. THOMAS -- Following two days of intense competition, the Antilles School Brainstorms emerged as the champions of the 38th Annual Virgin Islands Quiz Bowl presented by the St. Thomas-St. John District Federation of Teachers, Local 1825, on April 4.
Antilles finished with a score of 285 over Good Hope Country Day’s 145 at the end of the final Game 9.
The competition began on Sunday, April 3, when teams of students from Charlotte Amalie High School, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, All Saints Cathedral, Good Hope Country Day and Antilles School converged on the Addelita Cancryn Jr. High School auditorium to field a host of questions with topics ranging from current events, science, mathematics, literature, and history, to music, sports, philosophy and more. The Sunday competition lasted through Game 3, and Monday’s competition began with Game 4 and lasted through Game 9.
The winning Brainstorms is eligible to participate in the National Academic Quiz Bowl, slated for May on the mainland. However, due to financial setbacks, AFT chapter president Avery L. Lewis said the organization cannot afford to cover the cost of the team’s travel and has made a public plea for sponsorship.
Charlotte Amalie High School was the 2015 winner of the Virgin Islands Quiz Bowl.
