Richard Motta Jr., government house communication director, announced that individuals who qualify for the child tax credit and that individuals that qualify for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program have begun receiving payments in the Virgin Islands during the administration's weekly press conference on Monday.
Verita Carmichael, on behalf of Virgin Islands lottery executive director Raymond Williams, announced the two latest winners of the “Vax-to-Win” Lottery: Tashana Benjamin in the St. Croix District winner and Ingrid Iwuc in the St. Thomas and St. John District.
According to Mr. Motta, qualified families can expect to receive five monthly payments of $300 based on income, through December of 2021.
He credited the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Finance for their hard work in making this possible and added “This has been a tremendous undertaking as it is the first time a child tax credit is being issued in advance payments to Virgin Islanders who qualify as opposed to it reflecting on their income tax return.”
“For some families these checks represent a critical economical support and the Bryan-Roach administration is pleased to champion this initiative on behalf of children in the territory.”
Mr. Motta explained that these checks are coded with “2019ADVCTC2021” so that individuals know that it is a child tax credit payment instead of an income tax return.
The Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority spearheaded the ERAP program that began issuing benefit payments to the 517 families and individuals eligible to receive benefits under this program.
Mr. Motta said “Governor Bryan is encouraging eligible Virgin Islanders to take advantage of this program while there is still time, it can be used not only for rent but for utility bills as well.”
