The Department of Finance today issued $6.6 million in tax refunds, Government House has announced. That's in addition to $9.5 million in tax refunds D.O.F. issued on Dec. 12, bringing the total in December alone to $16.1 million.

In Fiscal Year 2020 to date, which began on October 1, 2019, the Bryan/Roach Administration said it has issued $34.8 million in income tax refunds and a total of $63.8 million since Governor Albert Bryan and Lieutenant Governor Tregenza Roach took office in January. That total surpasses Governor Kenneth Mapp's yearly average of $50 million; during his four-year tenure, Mr. Mapp issued roughly $200 million in tax refunds. In September, the Consortium highlighted the disparity between the two governors in issuing tax refunds, at the time making known that Mr. Bryan would have needed to release $24 million in additional refunds this year to keep on track with his predecessor.

“These returns signify my administration’s commitment to stabilizing the government and restoring the public’s trust in it,” Mr. Bryan said. “As the territory’s economy continues its recovery and the government’s revenue continues to grow, going forward the Government of the Virgin Islands plans to be current on processing income tax refunds and issue refund checks in a timely manner to avoid falling into arrears as has been the case in past administrations.”

In November, the Bryan/Roach Administration distributed 6,981 income tax refunds totaling $18.8 million, the release said.

According to Government House, some income tax filers may not have received refunds because of a wrong address or Social Security number or because of an audit. Filers who want to check that their information is correct can call the Bureau of Internal Revenue at 340-715-1040 on St. Thomas or 340-773-1040 on St. Croix.
