If you are a young Virgin Islander in Grades 8 through 11 with a passion for making a positive impact in the community, particularly in the area of resilience and disaster preparedness, the Federal Emergency Management Agency wants you.

FEMA is seeking new applicants from the US Virgin Islands to join the Youth Preparedness Council for a one-year term.

“Young leaders are needed to deliver messages of empowerment and creativity with emergency management in the US Virgin Islands”, said Mark Walters, Coordinator for FEMA’s Caribbean Area Office in the USVI.

The Council was created by FEMA in 2012 with the purpose of gathering youth leadership from across the country on the topic of disaster preparedness and community service. The agency says the council “demonstrates FEMA’s commitment to involve America’s youth in preparedness-related activities.”

“Fresh perspectives from young voices will strengthen the territory’s culture of resilience as we continue to focus on creative solutions to prepare and respond to hurricanes and other hazards in the Virgin Islands,” Mr. Walters declared.

The selected council members will, during the year, meet with FEMA staff to “develop strategies, initiatives, and project proposals.” A summit in Washington DC in July will bring council members together with “FEMA leaders and other preparedness professionals to network and learn more about the emergency management field,” according to the press release from FEMA.

Interested applicants can find more information on the Youth Preparedness Council's website, and access an online application form from FEMA. The agency is also planning an informational webinar on February 28.
