ST. CROIX — FEMA has approved more than $1.3 million in post-disaster Public Assistance funding for repairs to Friedensfeld Church in Kingshill, St. Croix, under a project awarded to the Moravian Church Virgin Islands Conference.

According to FEMA, the funding will support repairs to the church’s roof, gutters, windows and other building infrastructure.

The approval is part of FEMA’s Public Assistance program, which the agency says helps states, local communities, tribes and territories recover and rebuild safer, more resilient communities while protecting infrastructure from future events.

FEMA said the program reimburses and supports projects that include repairs to critical infrastructure, restoration of public buildings, road repairs, and costs incurred to protect public health and safety after a disaster.

In announcing the award, FEMA also framed the approval as part of President Donald J. Trump’s effort to reform federal disaster support and ensure taxpayer money is spent only on projects the agency says deliver safety and security to the American people.

The agency said it disburses funds to states and local communities because they are best positioned to determine how the money can be most effectively used.

FEMA said it coordinates directly with the state on all public assistance and hazard mitigation projects, an approach the agency described as state-led and federally supported.

The Friedensfeld Church project is among the latest examples cited by FEMA of disaster recovery funding being provided to help state and local communities rebuild after natural disasters. The agency said it continues its renewed commitment to helping communities recover from hurricanes, severe storms, tornadoes and wildfires while becoming more resilient to future disasters.
